Satellite Class Consultation - PLEASE READ

LETTER FROM SYMON COOKE - PLEASE READ

As has been well publicised, and many of you will have heard me share, we have a significant challenge locally (and wider) to create an increased number and variety of special school and specialist pupil school places. As a school I am very keen that we support our wider community and act as part of a solution. In conjunction with Brighter Futures for Children, who lead education provision for Reading Borough Council, and The Ridgeway Primary School, myself and my senior colleagues have been in discussion to established a specialist satellite class at The Ridgeway Primary School for September 2021.

The aim is that the satellite class will be led by The Avenue School staff and will cater for a small group of pupils presently on roll at The Avenue School. The pupils attending the satellite class will access The Avenue School curriculum. The children identified to attend the satellite class will be from the South Reading area and requiring the social inclusion opportunities that a school such as The Avenue are not able to offer. These pupils will be based in an allocated classroom/space but will also receive opportunities to integrate into aspects of the school life at The Ridgeway. It is hoped that, in time, they will also begin to access out of school activities with peers within their local area. Also, the individual pupils attending will not have to travel across Reading daily for school.

The result should be that a group of pupils have a school offer that best meets their needs and then spaces will be freed up at The Avenue for individuals who require a special school place.

Spaces in this satellite class at The Ridgeway will be allocated via The Avenue admissions process – there will be no discrete admission route to the satellite provision as all admissions will continue to be to the Avenue School’s main provision. This will ensure that places are allocated fairly and appropriate to need.

This exciting potential collaboration means there are numerous other benefits, with Avenue and Ridgeway staff being able to share skills, knowledge and facilities as the venture progresses. Other pupils in both schools will also be able share facilities and initiatives to support the curriculum offer.

From today, Monday 7th June 2021, Brighter Futures for Children are opening a consultation to gather your views of the proposed satellite provision at The Ridgeway. The link to the consultation can be found here: https://consult.reading.gov.uk/css/satellite-consultation/

Please follow the link and answer the questions. The consultation will run for 4 weeks, starting Monday 7th June 2021.
