Core Curriculum: Maths
The aim of our maths curriculum is to enable our pupils to know and comprehend the world around them by equipping them with the skills they need to understand problems of number, quantity and space relevant to their lives. Our curriculum develops our pupils’ memory and their ability to interpret information, solve problems, reason and make decisions.
The cognition and maths curriculum includes early cognition within our Experiential Curriculum, Life Skills Maths, Early Maths Play-Based learning and more formal maths teaching using White Rose Maths. Post 16, pupils continue to learn and apply their maths and cognition via the Experiential Curriculum, Life Skills Maths, ASDAN towards independence modules and AQA entry level qualifications. Teaching is led by class teachers supported by teaching and support assistants. Where appropriate, maths groups are streamed across adjacent classes.
Our curriculum is systematic, setting out a clear progression of key maths skills with teaching broken down into small achievable and sequential steps. There is a focus on the consistent use of core mathematical representations and clear mathematical language. We aim to make the teaching and learning of maths meaningful and relevant and to foster a sense of enjoyment and curiosity for maths which will ensure engagement and enable our pupils to learn the skills they need to lead fulfilled lives with increased levels of wellbeing and independence.
The Curriculum

Green Pathway
Experiential Curriculum:
Early cognition is taught in the Green Pathway via the Experiential Curriculum. This is a holistic teaching and learning resource in which personalised outcomes or skills are learnt and consolidated through meaningful and motivating experiences.
Life Skills Maths:
The Life Skills Maths Curriculum provides a stepping stone from the Experiential Curriculum and provides formal/semi-formal teaching of core maths outcomes consolidated by functional life skills activities.
Blue Pathway
Early Maths Play-Based Learning + Attention Autism
Play-based learning provides a rich enabling environment for the development of early mathematical concepts through play. Sessions are supported by using Attention Autism to introduce and teach early maths skills.
Purple and Yellow Pathways
White Rose Maths (WRM) – Reception Scheme
Observations during play-based maths learning will guide teachers on the readiness of pupils for the WRM Reception Scheme. The WRM Reception Scheme provides a structured sequential curriculum with a focus on developing and consolidating core mathematical skills whilst being rich in opportunities for play-based exploration and learning. The scheme develops early understanding of number, shape, measure and spatial thinking. It is divided into sequential blocks which are further broken down into small steps of learning. In-house baseline assessments are used to assess each individual’s current level of skill and to ensure teaching is delivered at the right level. Pupils work through the scheme sequentially at a pace to suit each child.
White Rose Maths (WRM) – Primary Scheme
If and when ready, pupils will progress from the WRM Reception scheme onto the WRM Year 1 to 6 schemes. Each scheme of learning presents opportunities for sequential progression in attainment of core maths skills. Teaching and learning is organised into blocks which focus on key areas including place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, measure, fractions and geometry. Each block is broken down into small sequential steps. Baseline assessments using the school's in-house assessment tool and WRM assessments are carried out to ensure that pupils are taught at an appropriate level.
Maths lessons include dedicated time for pupils to develop their numerical fluency. A consolidation of recently and previously learnt skills is provided for via maths practice using workstation activities, independent work, messy table activities and/or maths games.
Post-16
Experiential Curriculum – Community & Life Skills
Early cognition for our students from the Green Pathway continues to be taught via the Experiential Curriculum and Life Skills Maths.
ASDAN – Towards Independence – Developing Numeracy (Introduction and Progression)
Students transitioning into the 6th Form from the Purple Pathway work towards completing ASDAN – Towards Independence modules in Maths. These modules enable our 6th Form students to practice their core maths skills by undertaking activities that develop their personal, social, work-related and independent living skills.
AQA Maths Entry Level 1, 2 and 3
Students transitioning from the Yellow Pathway to 6th Form who are working at a high level in WRM Primary Year 1 and above continue to learn formal maths, via the White Rose Maths scheme and work towards AQA Entry Level 1, 2, or 3 accreditations.
