Careers & Work Related Learning
Through our school’s individualised approach, each student will discover their own strengths and preferences in the world of work, volunteering, and community.
We deliver Careers and Work Related Learning across Green, Yellow, Purple, and Post-16 Pathways, enabling each year group from Year 7 to Year 14 to have a work-related plan. These plans are designed to be progressive and bridge the gap between education, independence, and supported employment. Every plan is available in both an adult and pupil accessible version under the subpages Students and Parents.
Our career programme provides opportunities to:
- Understand what work is
- Get to know the world of work
- Explore their options and build on real experiences
- Encounter employers annually for every year group
Our careers programme is managed by Louise Aspell. For any queries, please contact her at 0118 214 5331 or laspell@avenue.reading.sch.uk
Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance
The Gatsby Benchmarks were developed in 2014 – setting eight clear standards for careers education. We aim to engage pupils, parents, and employers to achieve the eight Gatsby benchmarks. These are:
1. A stable careers programme
2. Learning from career and labour market information
3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
5. Encounters with employers and employees
6. Experiences of workplaces
7. Encounters with further and higher education
8. Personal guidance
We engage with external providers to assist us in delivering the eight benchmarks. The Avenue school works with:
- Talentino to deliver the Careers at Every Level programme

- Careers and Enterprise Company help us with strategic delivery, and we are part of their national network
- Elevate for individual careers advice and plans for students in years 11 and 13
