Wellbeing and Emotional Literacy

At our school, supporting pupils’ wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. We know that children learn best when they feel safe, understood and emotionally regulated, so we provide a wide range of support to help every pupil thrive.

We also recognise every pupil is unique and many children benefit from tailored support, so we create bespoke sensory profiles to help staff understand what helps pupils stay calm, what may cause a sensory overload for them, and which strategies would be best to support focus and regulation. These profiles guide our classroom approaches and ensure each child receives consistent and personalised support.

Trained ELSA support

We are proud to have trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) who work with pupils to develop skills such as:

  • Understanding and expressing emotions
  • Building confidence and self-esteem
  • Managing worries or anxieties
  • Developing friendships and social skills

ELSAs offer structured sessions as well as informal support throughout the school day.

Access to specialist mental health advice

Our school works directly with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Through mental health advice surgeries, staff can seek guidance from CAMHS professionals to help to better support pupils' emotional needs. This ensures early help and a coordinated approach for those that need more specialist input.

Educational Mental Health Practitioner support

We also have access to an Educational Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) who provides:

  • Individual assessments
  • Targeted 1:1 emotional wellbeing support
  • Strategies that pupils can use in class and at home
  • Advice for staff to help pupils regulate and prepare for learning

Aromatherapy and Therapeutic Touch

To help pupils relax, regulate, and feel grounded, we offer a range of sensory-based wellbeing activities, including:

  • Aromatherapy
  • Story massage
  • Hand and foot massage
  • Positive Touch activities
  • M Technqiue
  • Sherbourne movements
  • Yoga-based movements
  • Mindfulness and breathing exercises
  • Relaxation techniques

These approaches can reduce anxiety, increase focus, and support emotional regulation. They are especially helpful for pupils who benefit from calm and predictable sensory input.

Wellbeing Story Sessions

Throughout the year, students take part in topic-based wellbeing stories. These sessions introduce simple coping strategies (such as breathing techniques, recognising emotions, problem-solving, and positive self-talk) through engaging and accessible narratives. Students are encouraged to use these strategies throughout the school day.

Our whole-school approach to wellbeing ensures pupils feel safe and ready to learn; combining specialist knowledge and therapeutic approaches contributes to our aim to make the school's environment one where every child can flourish.
