Makaton

Makaton is a communication programme that uses symbols, signs, and speech to enable children and adults to communicate their everyday wants and needs.

It supports the development of communication skills such as:

  • attention and listening
  • memory and recall
  • comprehension
  • organisation of language and expression.

Here at The Avenue, Makaton signing is used throughout the day to communicate key words for transitions around the school and topic-based vocabulary through songs and stories. We learn new signs through “Sign of the Week”, which you can find on our weekly newsletter, along with a Makaton code buster.

Makaton signs are used, alongside speech, to support children and adults to understand the spoken word. Using signs and symbols can help children and adults who have no speech or whose speech is unclear. Signs are useful when the young person is a visual learner and can help develop their vocabulary skills.

Makaton can help take away the frustration of not being able to communicate by connecting the individual with the world around them.

Makaton Introduction Courses are held at school for parents. If you are interested, please contact Kelly Boahene Family Support Work on 0118 2145303
