Core Curriculum - Science
Science at The Avenue is inclusive and aspirational. It aims to excite the imagination and foster a sense of awe and wonder about natural phenomena and the mysteries of the universe.
Science is everywhere, and The Avenue curriculum supports our young people to understand the world around them in meaningful, fun and engaging ways, through contexts that they encounter in their everyday lives. Science lessons cultivate curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. Our young people also learn to identify problems, devise solutions, and persevere through challenges – fostering resourcefulness. The curriculum develops critical thinking and reasoning skills which will support decision-making throughout our pupil’s lives.
The science framework for purple and yellow pathways is organised into 6 topics:

Each topic has 6 levels of knowledge:

These levels map out carefully planned granular and sequential steps. This allows staff to plan, teach, and assess personalised and differentiated lessons, which build upon each of the young people’s prior learning.
In the blue pathway, science concepts are taught through six topic-based 'Understanding The World' units, based on the Natural World. These are:

"I can" statements are carefully mapped out for four different stages of learners, so activities are accessible and meaningful. Engaging opportunities are planned to support the young people to explore and learn about the world around them in meaningful contexts.
In all pathways, lessons build a learner’s ‘Science Capital’. All pupils can access the curriculum at their starting points and move at their own pace to develop their skills and knowledge, supported by confident staff.
